If you’ve ever tried to get your website ranked in a high volume search with Google, it’s basically a life long quest. It’s so much of a quest that people who know very few facts about the topic are actually paid good consulting money in order to take their best guesses at how to get better rankings.

Then, of course, as soon as you do that, Google can just change a gear in its system and you’re dropped right out again. I’ve been going down this road with my game server hosting startup HostedGameServers.com. I have a great service on servers that perform great. I ping 16 to my server and I’m over 1,500 miles from it! We’ve got a few clients and its the best we can do with manual promotion while we work to get listed in Google. Right now we’re about position 408… except if you typo the search.

First, search ‘Game Servers’ in Google. Not listed. Well, we are, but we’re on page 48 or something stupid.

Next, search for ‘Game Severs’. Note the missing r. Yep, we’re first page.

Our keyword significance is perfect. It’s #1 Game #2 Server #3 Hosting and our backlinks aren’t bad (about 125). Our site does nothing against the Google laws of sneaky code, either. I feel like I also have plenty of content.

My best guess as to what is going on involves the proper term ‘Game Servers’ being too valuable to list me, even if I am perfectly relevant. This search term gets a lot of hits, so Google has some high requirements for who gets listed. I’m not sure what those are exactly.

Other searches, like the typo’d ‘game severs’ get much less volume. So much less volume that I show up right on the front page. Why? Because I’m relevant but just not trust worthy enough for some reason. I have never had ’severs’ anywhere in my code base. I grep’d it.

I have no idea what Google wants form me. We provide a good service and our site is relevant for the right terms. We’ve even spent hundreds of man hours trying to get out there and spread links. Man its a hard world with Google!

I need to sort about 18,000 home images taken over four years into a variety of folders on my home computer. We thought: hey, its on the server – mission complete. Three years later it’s an utter mess. Perhaps I can find the words to ask my computer to do this task for me.

First, you’ll need to install the exif tool:

su -c 'yum install perl-Image-ExifTool'

Then, I ran the following command:

screen -S sort nice find ./Pictures -type d -exec exiftool '-Directory<DateTimeOriginal' -d Orginized/%Y/%m/%d {} \;

./Pictures being the location of the stuff I wanted to sort relative to my working directory, and Orginized/ being the dir I want to move them into.

The screen -S command starts up a screen session so you can press Control-A then d to background it and keep doing other work. The nice command makes my pathetic little Pentium 1.6 not explode into flames. Don't you hate it when that happens???

This worked on Centos 5.4, i386.

Did some digging because my stupid do nothing game guard client for Aion would just crash with error message 0 a few seconds after starting. Deleting the GameGuard folder does not seem to matter.

Apparently you can use the .des files from the Chinese version over top of yours and it works fine.

Found the solution at the bottom of this thread.

But, because you don’t need to go chasing links… here’s the .des file in the form of a .rar as linked on the forums (no registration required to download for this site!).

Open up this folder for 64bit:
C:\Program Files (x86)\NCSoft\Aion\bin32
For 32bit, AION will just BSOD in Win7 right now, I’m assuming this is going to be fixed by Aion later.

Then rename GameGuard.des to GameGuard.bullshit and copy in the one from the rar supplied here. Presto, it works! You’re Welcome!

If you appreciate, please drop a comment thanks!
Oh.. and if you can’t extract it, download winrar from www.rarlabs.com

It looks like IE7’s fault – like normal – because Chrome and FireFox do it right. Taking out either lightbox’s javascript or Adobe’s makes it work… but no combination of the two I see does.

Anyway, If i have both of these javascript files in the header of any web page, I get the following:

Line: 3975
Char: 9
Error: Object doesn’t support this property or method
Clode: 0

The image then comes up as if it were linked to directly.

Total crap!!! Anyone else getting this out there?

EDIT: Apparently this is done with du -sh * for all files, du -sh */ for all directories. As a side note, you can use c in there to calculate the total size of all listed items. Thanks Yan Morin!

Sounds kinda stupid, but I was unable to find a trigger with du or dh to show the size of the directories in my current directory. If i did du -h it showed me the size of the file, but also showed me the size of every file within. I just wanted a high level overview of the total size of each folder I had in front of me.

I noticed du -h DirName showed the size of the dir or file on the last line….

A quick for loop solved the problem! Maybe it will be useful for someone else, too!

for d in *; do du -h "$d" | tail -n 1; done

When downloading drivers via the service tag I was faced with the error seen above: “This comptuer does not meet the minimum requirements for installing the software.”. Searching by service tag is supposed to only display drivers that work for that specific system, as shipped. However, I had this problem on two seperate C521s. The real driver is on the website, but you’ll have to browse by product name and look at the full list of options to find your driver. this problem could be happening on other systems, but so far I’ve only seen it on a Dell C521

Ever been away from your home computer and thought: “Man, I would like to start that torrent download now so it’ll be done when I get home later.” ? Well, now there’s a way to drop .torrent files into a location on your computer and have it automatically begin downloading where you have utorrent running. uTorrent watches a directory for torrents and dropbox gets them there. I give my friend Jake credit for this one… this came naturally to him when he installed Dropbox.

The process is two fold. First, install and register a Dropbox account from www.getdropbox.com. Dropbox lets you sync up to 2G of files for free across all of your computers. It reminds me somewhat of an automated version control system that all your computers are constantly watching for changes. Just change a file on any of your computers and the change is synced across all of them.

Once you have installed Dropbox and registered for an account, create a folder named ‘Torrents to download’ within the ‘Dropbox’ folder you now have in ‘My Documents’. Repeat the sign-up and download process on the computer you want to host the torrent downloads and link it to the same account. Try putting files in from one computer and watching them pop out on the other end. You can also use the online web interface by logging in at www.getdropbox.com to upload a file into your Dropbox… or pull one out.

Install utorrent from the official site here; then open the preferences screen (options -> preferences). Choose directories from the left side menu and then check the box labeled ‘automatically load .torrents from’. Specify your Dropbox folder you created earlier: ‘Torrents to download’. Click the ‘delete loaded .torrents’ too if you like. It’s a neat feature.

Now, go to any computer where you have dropbox and just plop a torrent file in there. You’ll notice that if you checked the ‘delete loaded .torrents’ option it will go away moments later. Your other utorrent computer will catch the change, load the file into utorrent then delete it… that well then be synced back to you and the file will be removed right before your eyes. I strongly encourage looking at some of the other options within utorrent, too.

It’s true utorrent does have a web interface, but that would require you to open up firewall ports – ew! This method bypasses all that madness and your torrent files start instantly. I use it!

I was thinking about neat things to do with all the space on my 4Gb Micro SD card one day when I realized… I could put a bootable OS on there! The first one that came to mind was my personal favorite utility CD: UBCD. Ultimate Boot CD lets you view drive contents and tons tons more. Any computer that can boot off a USB device is yours to use. Since the G1 can use up to 16Gb SDHC memory cards, there’s plenty of room to install and boot… anything!

I did some quick Googling and found this helpful site that explains just how to boot UBCD off of a thumb drive. It’s actually quite easy.

Step 1:
Get a microSD or SDHC card that is at least 500Mb and install it in your G1. For newbies: the slot flips open just below the green call button, you’ll have to put the keyboard up to see it.

Step 2:
Get a USB cable and hook your G1 into your computer. Slide the notification pane down and select the item named ‘USB Connected’ then choose ‘Mount’ from the popup options.

Step 3:
Download and install UBCDfix2.exe which I have re-hosted on this blog here. If you don’t trust me, an alternate location is listed on the pendrivelinux.com post. Run the EXE and extract the files to a folder named UBCD on your desktop.

Step 4:
Download the most current UBCD image. Here’s a link. Move it into the root of the UBCD folder you created on your desktop and put the UBCDfix2 files in.

Step 5:
From the UBCD folder on your desktop, click fixubcd2.bat and follow the onscreen instructions.

DONE! You should now be able to reboot into your thumb drive. Be sure your motherboard both supports booting from a USB device and has the priority for that set above the normal hard drive. On a newer Dell, you can hit F12 to directly choose what to boot off of. Not only can you still save data to your thumbdrive from your G1 like usual, but you can get to all the stuff on your G1 via the UBCD you boot off of too.

Boot UBCD from your G1 Phone

Oh yeah, and for all you guys who think the USB headset was stupid on the G1, consider USB headsets a blessing. Your headset can now talk back to the phone. Did you know you can press the button on the headset to switch songs or start playing music without even unlocking or touching your phone? You can also do all this over Bluetooth 2.0 once Cupcake releases this month too. I picked up a Voyager 855 just for that.

EDIT: Though it’s possible to install UBCD4Win onto your G1, I do not have the steps outlined here yet. I will return in the future and post them. UBCD4Win lets you browse the web with firefox, use a full featured GUI and run tons of programs.

When you learn to live in an operating system, even the smallest changes make a big difference in how you use it. Here are some changes I’ve noticed with Windows 7 that I haven’t read anywhere else:

The good:

When choosing a default audio device, you do not need to restart programs to change audio outputs. Sound will immediately switch over to the new device.

Games and other full screen, 3D accelerated applications alt-tab nearly instantly!

When pressing alt-enter for full screen mode on some windows, the start bar now hides behind correctly and predictably. Sometimes in Vista you would have to press the start button then click on the full screen application for it to move to the background correctly.

My keyboard volume keys just seem to work a lot snappier… there was a lag there before when in games.

My monitors were correctly identified automatically!

The new backup system is wonderful! It will target network locations and handle drive mapping automatically. Even to a Linux computer running samba!

The search feature seems to work better, and they’ve added a lot of built in terms. For example, searching ‘programs’ reveals a variety of choices such as ‘Install a program” instead of just ‘add/remove programs’

The new startup options for recovery are much, much better. They support restoring from an image and an automatic troubleshooter all within a nice GUI with options.

Windows seem to behave much better on remote desktop. they never seem to be too big or too small if I was connecting from a system with a much different resolution.

The bad:

Punkbuster does not work in CoD4, I have to play on servers with hackers.

PowerTray does not give me right click options on windows like always on top anymore – I loved that app!

My Sound Blaster Audigy Xtreme Audio BSODs the OS.

When I put an application shortcut for chrome onto my taskbar along with Chrome, it things I just have two copies of chrome open (technically I do) and I would like it to figure that out depending on what I click.

My gadets broke. They no longer do anything when clicked in the control panel and do not show up on the desktop.

When on dual monitors, I cant lock a window to the side of the screens that meet each other. I can only auto-resize something there with the keyboard shortcuts.

The keyboard shortcut to enable/disable a projector just turns off your second monitor if you’re on a dual monitor desktop.

If you change networks on your system, it will automatically assume its a new public network and turn all firewall rules back on. If you’re changing NIC settings remotely, this will lock you out until you change the network type from the console again. ew.

As a side note, my friend pointed out that any gadget that works with Google desktop can be converted to a windows gadget to run natively: Amnesty Gadget Converter

More to come.
